The symptoms range from mild to life threatening and varies from person to person. The COVID-19 strain was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan City in China.
COVID-19 symptoms are similar to other colds and flu viruses. Symptoms include fever, coughing, sore throat, fatigue, and shortness of breath. A more serious condition can develop in vulnerable people, for example – the elderly, immune compromised individuals, Indigenous populations and those with chronic medical conditions.
COVID-19 is easily transmitted through touching and close contact with a person who is infectious. We can all help, to slow the spread of this coronavirus in our community by:
If your symptoms become serious, such as difficulty breathing call 000 for urgent medical help.
If you develop flu-like symptoms, wear a mask (if you have one) and stay at least 1.5 metres away from other people. If you want to see a Doctor, call ahead to make an appointment. Each clinic or hospital will have precautions you will need to follow, it is important to adhere to these instructions in an effort to minimise the spread of the disease.
Currently in Australia, only people that have been in contact with others with COVID-19 or those that have recently travelled overseas and are showing symptoms of the disease, are eligible to get tested for COVID-19. This is due to the short supply of testing kits.
Test results take a few days to come back and during this time, you will be asked to self-isolate at home and stay away from others.
