Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australia, accounting for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers. Australia has one of the highest skin cancer incidence rates in the world, with two out of three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70.

Most of the deaths associated with skin cancer are preventable. It is therefore important to detect these cancers early, since the earlier a skin cancer is detected the easier it is to cure.

Your doctor recommends regular skin cancer checks, particularly for people who spend a lot of time in the sun. Although skin cancers mostly appear on the face, head, back and upper limbs, they can appear anywhere on the body. A skin check takes approximately 15 minutes and involves a thorough examination of your body by your doctor.

Your doctor will inspect spots, moles and freckles, and any other marks that may be of concern using a variety of techniques, including the latest technology to diagnose and treat skin cancers. Today there are a number of treatment options available, including cream applications, which are suitable for some cancers and pre-cancers.
